33 Coupe Having Fun 18        8/09/06

I know I've said this before and I'll say it again, car show season is in full swing around our area, and around the country. There were a few shows that were on my list that I really wanted to attend this year and the "Garden Of Angels" was one of them. This show is held at Yucaipa Regional Park in Yucaipa, Ca. which is a great place to have a show because it's in a park that has a bunch of trees and a couple of small lakes. The Garden Of Angels is a charity car show to benefit the "Safe Arms ~ Safe Haven for Newborns" that provide a final resting place for abandoned and unclaimed children.

The show was held on Sunday, July 30 and is open to all classes. Some of the things they have there are a pancake breakfast, a huge raffle, 50/50 drawing, oldies music, games, vendors and food.

The weather around here has been very hot to say the least and if you remember the last show that I went to, it was almost too hot to attend but the weather was a little different for this show.

I like to sleep with the windows open when the weather permits but lately everyone has had there A/C running day and night. On the day before the show, the temps came down and the sound of air conditioners running were once again silent. At about 4:00 am (the morning of the show), I was awakened by the sound of the one thing I really didn't want, rain, which is usually fine by me, but not today because nobody wants that on a car show day. I got up and stared out the window just looking and listening to it. I couldn't believe my luck because I thought the show would be canceled.

The gates were scheduled to open at 8 am and we made plans to be there by 7:45 so at about 7:30, I called Gary to see what he was going to do. He wasn't ready to go and he didn't know if he was going at all because of the weather. I told him that I was going to wait a little bit and see if it stopped raining and he agreed. About 30 minutes later I called Larry to see what he was going to do. Larry was already at the show and he said that they were going to have the show and there were a bunch of cars there already. By now it was about 8:30 and I had to make a decision on going or staying so I called Gary again and he said that it was raining to much and he was going to stay home.

I asked my wife what she thought and right then, the rain stopped and she said "lets load up and go" so out I went and brought the car around to the front. Once we were just leaving the driveway, it started to come down again. Now this wouldn't be so bad but I never put any windshield wipers on the car so this was going to be a fun ride. On my way up the street, one of my buddies happen to be on his porch and gave me the "what the hell are you doing" look as I went by. I had to laugh because I didn't know either but there we went.

To save time, we took the freeway but drove slowly. The rain really wasn't too bad to drive in despite not having any wipers. Normally we would've taken the back streets to this area but today we didn't have time. My wife had to remind me about something I said awhile back which was, "I thought you said that you weren't going to drive the car in the rain?" Well, I had to laugh because I did say that and here I was driving in it. Silly me!!

We arrived at about 9:30 and we had a bit of good news, it wasn't raining anymore but the bad news was, it started to get foggy. Once we checked in, we found Larry because he had a spot saved for us. Good ol' Larry, he's always one of the first to arrive at a car show and if we happen to show up late, he puts a lawn chair next to his car for us which holds a spot to park in.

You can see in this shot that the fog is starting to creep in. Everyone was wiping off their cars but it wasn't any use because of how damp it was with the drizzle and fog.

I took this picture (which was directly across from where our car was)  and is only 50 to 60 feet away. After about a hundred feet, everything disappeared into the fog.

Here you can see a few more cars that were right next to us as well. Behind all of us was a small hill which went to one of the lakes. On a clear day, it makes for a nice view.

This is another group of cars that were on the other side of us. I had to crop this picture because the fog covered some of the cars. The black 32 five window was a nice car. If you look down the row, you can see some guys wiping off there cars.
