Well just because this shifter will
work with a four speed automatic doesn't mean it will work with my
transmission. Now does that surprise you?? It shouldn't!! The piece on
the left is what came with the shifter which bolts up to the shifter rod
that comes out of the trans. It has three hole locations for your cable
to fit in depending on
what transmission you are using. In my case, a 4L80E isn't on the list
so I'll have to make a shifter fork to work with my application. The other
fork that you see to the right is what came with my transmission so I
plan to hack this up into a workable solution because it's thicker than
the B&M piece.

The cardboard piece with the blue tape
on it is the shape I need to end up with. I added a small step in it so
it would clear the transmission pan before it mounts to the cable.

I broke out the hacksaw to start
cutting my new fork and come to
find out, the material is heat treated. I didn't even scratch the
surface of it because it's so hard but that could be a good thing too.
The new shifter fork is made with three pieces and is only tack welded
together at this point so I can make sure the hole is in the right location. After I'm
sure the hole is where it needs to be, I'll final weld it. Now the funny
thing that I found with the hole location is it's not the same as the
one that came with the shifter. I guess it has to do not being on center
anymore like the other one is. All I know is after bolting up my new
fork with its hole in the seemly right location, then hooking the cable up my
shifter only, I then tried each gear one at a time to make
sure it was right. What I mean is while I changed gears on the shifter,
I also changed gears on the transmission with the shifter fork and then
slide the transmission side of the cable into the hole one gear at a
time. If the transmission doesn't go into gear fully, it
can destroy it so this had to be right.

Here is the finished piece ready to be
bolted on. I gave it a few radius' and blended the welds a little. It
should look much better after paint or plating as I don't know just yet
what it will get. After I get the shifter installed, I'll be able to try
it and make sure nothing else has to be changed but it should work good.
