33 Coupe Having Fun 52       5/21/10

The Poppet Flats Volunteer Fire Company #63 had their second car show on May 15th. The show was held at the old San Gorgonio Inn parking lot in Banning and included a pancake breakfast from 7:00 to 11:00 am and the car show ran from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

This show had all kinds of vintage fire trucks, a large raffle, a blood drive by the Riverside County Blood bank, Riverside County Sheriff's K-9 demo and the Mercy Air helicopter made an appearance landing right in the parking lot close by. It's been a few years since I've been near a helicopter landing and it didn't take long to remember what rotor wash is while it's landing and taking off.

Last year this show was held in the small community of Poppet Flats in the San Jacinto mountains but they decided to hold it in town this time because they thought it would draw more people. Unfortunately there were only about 40 cars that showed up and they hope they have a better turnout next time.

There were lots of old and new fire trucks on display and one guy from town owns all of these that you see here.

I remember when I was about 10 years old and I was lucky enough to take a ride on a truck like this while the fire department did some controlled burns in fields near my house. I asked if I could ride on the back with them and they let me. I'm sure that wouldn't happen today but it was very cool back then.

Later that same day (when I was 10), they hooked the truck up to a fire hydrant to fill it up. When one of the guys was playing with one of the smaller hoses, I asked if I could try it. The guy said 'sure thing kid' and he handed me the hose. Once I opened the valve I ended up on my backside and all guys on the truck got a good laugh out of that. I should have known something was wrong when the guy had a smirk on his face as he said, 'have fun'. The good ol' days, I remember them well.

Someone used a felt marker to put the gear pattern on the dash because notice how the "one - two" shift pattern is. I'm thinking a few people must have hit reverse a time or two.

Here is an old truck from San Diego which dates back to the late 30's. Can you tell what's on the back? If not check out the picture below.

It looks like surfs up in San Diego!
